Survey Results by Noland Adams (Past Owners)

In Noland Adams's book: "The Complete Restoration and Technical Guide" (Vol.1 and Vol.2) he has a list of cars the participated in a survey with their codes/numbers from different items of those cars.(Listed after each "year" section.) My questions: Is there a way to fine out who sent this information into Noland? (Past owner) I now own a car that is listing in this survey. I do not have any information about the past owner(s). Is there anyone that may still have the information that was send into Nolan that may link it back to one of the car's owners? Who should I contact about finding a paper trail on this survey?

I guess this may be too obvious, but why wouldn't you start with Noland?

Re: How to Contact Noland Adams?

Does anyone have Noland's e-mail address or phone number? What is the best way to get in contact with Mr. Adams? Thanks..

Re: How to Contact Noland Adams?

Noland gets a LOT of calls/emails, so I wouldn't expect a FAST reply. Heck, he was at our Chapter meet in London, England in 2000 and I asked the same thing... One of our chapter members has a 396 that was one of his survey cars (bought from the original owner in California when the car was only 6 months old and brought to Colorado by a Rocky Mtn Chapter founder member).

Our fella, the current owner, wanted to know who filled out the survey (the original owner or the 2nd owner who WAS an NCRS member). Noland asked me to write him. I did.

I wrote a nice letter, included a SASE envelope addressed to the current owner who'd asked me to research for him and I told Noland in the letter the current owner was willing to pay for Noland's time to look up the info. No reply...

A second request letter was sent two years later. No reply...

Soooo, while Noland's a GREAT GUY, don't get your hopes up on answers here. He wrote these books LONG ago and I'm not sure how much of his original survey data, notes, Etc. still exists.

Re: How to Contact Noland Adams?

I ran across one of those survey requests a couple of years ago, tucked in an old magazine. I think it had a note at the bottom that no personal information about the owner or car would be released. I don't think there was even any spaces for owner's name, address, and so on.

Remember that was long before 9 out of 10 cars were original/restored/rare and people were leary of some guy asking for all sorts of details on YOUR car. Only with a promise of never letting anyone know who you were or where you or your car were would some (many, many, many) people give information to him.

I imagine that promise still stands.

Possibly the only way you would get anything is to ask him to contact the person filling out the survey, asking if they would like to contact you, and then hoping. And after 20 - 25 years, I'm sure many of those people have moved. (I have 27 times.) He may not be able to reach them if he wanted to.

Re: How to Contact Noland Adams?

Noland was pretty careful with the information he took in for his books. When he requested photos of certain features of my '67, he mailed me a roll of black and white film and requested that I return it to him undeveloped. That was in about 1985. In 1988, he was at the Cypress Gardens meet signing dust covers for Volume 2 although the book itself didn't come out until a year or two later. He put a lot of effort into these two books.

Re: How to Contact Noland Adams?

While running a couple of online surveys for other items, I did collect names and addresses, but they were necessary to track where items had gone to. However, I stated that they would not be contacted by me unless their information somehow warranted extra research. Their personal information would never be given out. The only information given was item information, and that had nothign to do with location.

Since Noland dealt with many more people in a time less accustom to surveys, I'm sure he had something along those lines. Not to mention legal ramifications, if he collected this in confidence, and then released it publicly, there would be problems.

While most of us look at any pile of information on OUR cars is fair game, there are many who do not, especially if they are part of that information.
