    70 L-46 heads

Do heads have to go back to the same side for a rebuild? Heads, block, intake were not machined. Is there a difference in left and right configuration? (other than the date)

    Dennis-----

No, the heads are not side-specific, at all. However, that being said, I usually mark the heads and return them to the same side that they originally occupied. It's not really necessary, but I do it, anyway. Of course, this only applies to an existing engine being totally rebuilt with original components.

      what if?

Lets say I mixed the sides when I assembled the engine. Nothing machined, all original parts. Could this create an alignment problem with the heads/ intake?

Dennis - this would not create an alignment problem with the intake. To some degree, the heads and decks may take a minor "set" to each other, but if they are flat, it really makes no difference. Especially if you are using a FelPro printoseal type gasket upon reassembly, which will take up any minor irregularities. The heads are not fitted to the block at the factory, they are all machined in separate operations anyway. Any facing of the heads for flatness during prep would completely remomve any technical reason to worry about which side they came from. However, I, like Joe, always mark and keep them on the same side they have been on. Just a personal preference and idiosyncrasy.......have you already separated them and don't know which one was on which side?.......Craig

There are usually "tell tale" signs as to which side is which.
Like the accessory holes. If any were used in the original configuration, then they should have clean threads.
Accessory holes that have been in the rear, unused, will likely be somewhat rusty/pitted.
Even if you have run a tap in all the holes, some evidence should still remain.
