    C3 engine fan

I have the opportunity to purchase a supposedly correct style engine fan for my A/C equipped 1972 big block. I received the following part identification numbers from the seller, regarding the fan in question: (3992095 K81 914686). My Corvette's production date is Jan. 31, 1972. According to the NCRS archives, part number 3992095 is correct for a 1972 BB with air. However, what do the other seller-supplied numbers (K81 914686) signify? Is this part completely appropriate for my vehicle (including the date code)? Thanks.

I will hazard a guess.......based on a fan I have for a 67 vette I bought a while back. One supplier includes an internal 6 digit number on the blades for identification.......and a year/date code with 3 digits. This may translate to K8 1971...where K8 is a month and day. Not sure, but this may be the case.....Craig

I too have a '72 BB A/C car. I believe you'll find K81 to be Nov. '1981. However, I'd sure check REAL closely as an "7" could be read as an "8" ... in which case the fan would be perfectly dated for your car... maybe a long shot, but you never know ...

Thanks for the responses. The engine fan photo I received from the seller, does clearly show a date code of "K81" (which I understand from Mike McHugh, is November, 1981). So, it unfortunately sounds like this fan is 10 years too new for my January, 1972 vehicle production. I'm surprised GM still produced this tipped-blade BB fan (Part No. 3992095) in 1981. Anyone have an idea of a reasonable price for this part (with a K81 date code)?

I have a similar car with a build date of March 72 ... I will look at the fan numbers and post a response.....

Your car should have smog on it.... if it still does, can I get you to take some pictures of it for me??

          Thanks

The date code on the blade assembly decodes to November, 1981. The GM #3992095 fan blade assembly was discontinued from SERVICE in July, 1986. So, it was very likely still being manufactured as of 1981.

This particular fan blade assembly is very difficult and expensive to locate. It was used ONLY on 1971-73 Corvettes with LS-5 and C-60. Used examples bring about $250+; NOS examples bring $500+.

                Joe,

From your post, I find it interesting that a NOS example of engine fan (Part No. 3992095) is priced much higher than a correctly dated and rare used example (especially considering how long the service part was produced). The fan I have located (Part No. 3992095 and produced in November, 1981) is used. Should I expect the part I've located to be priced somewhere between a correctly dated used example and a NOS example?

                  James-----

Many folks are more concerned about configuration and condition than they are about "dates". The chances are that most available NOS pieces will have a SERVICE-only date. However, they will also be NEW, undamaged, and with a LONG service life ahead of them. ANY used blade assembly, with correct "dates" or not, may include hidden problems such as bent (and straightened) blades, etc.

In any event, the prices that I mentioned are just a GENERAL guide. It's possible that some folks might be willing to pay a big premium for a correctly dated, but used, blade assembly. Most would not, but some might. I certainly would not be one of the ones that would.

                    Lou:

While I believe my '72 to be stock, it is definitely not a Bowtie candidate. I think you'd be better-off taking Mike up on his offer. In fact, Mike, if you wouldn't mind, would you also send me a picture of your smog system? Thanks.
