    Also, be aware that when the timing set is aligned "dot-to-dot" (crank gear dot at 12, cam sprocket dot at 6), the engine is at #6 TDC, NOT #1 TDC; if you installed the distributor and pointed the rotor to the #1 wire tower with the engine in that position, the distributor is 180* out.

      John: great point! This critical difference (valve timing vs. ignition timing) caused me MUCH consternation in my first SBC build-up.
      Even Dave Vizard's great how-to guide is VERY unclear on this. Now, I always remove the valve cover to watch #1's valves and confirm TDC on the compression stroke.

      BTW, thanks once again for your fantastic method for solid lifter adjustment.
      Too cool...

      As for Steve's problem, I'm betting on open valves/no compression.
