    '66 Oil Filter Assembly

While changing the oil in my '66 today a small spring (approximately 1' long x 1/2" diameter, made of very thin wire) fell out of the filter attaching housing that is attached the block. I can not find any information on this assembly in the Service Manual, AIM, or any of the parts catalogs I have. Anyone out there know the origin/application of this spring? It appears to perhaps be part of a check-ball assembly, but no ball fell out with the spring. The engine is the original 427/390hp, still using the old style cartridge type oil filter unit. Joe, you back from church yet?

    Re: '66 Oil Filter Assembly

Assuming you have the same replaceable cartridge filter as my '63,there is an aluminum part bolted to the block filter base that contains the oil filter bypass valve. A bypass valve is present on most engines to insure that the engine receives oil if the filter clogs. It is secured with a couple of quarter inch (7/16s hex) cap screws. It normally has to be removed to change the gasket. Suggest you remove it and tell us what you find.

      Duke,

I Removed the aluminum piece it had two gaskets, one on the bottom for the filter cannister and one on top for the aluminum housing. Since a picture is worth a thousand words I'll go take a couple of digital pictures. Can I attach pictures to posts on this board? Otherwise, I'll send them to your email address. Thanks.

        Re: '66 Oil Filter Assembly

I think you're telling me you have a replaceable cartridge filter like my '63 small block. If memory serves me correctly the the oil filter bypass valve consists of a disk, spring, and roll pin assembled into the aluminum housing. Possibly one of these parts has degraded or failed. My 1980 parts book shows a valve, by pass, 5574979, (group 1.837) applicable to all 55-67 V-8s. This is probably assembly, but we'll have the wait until Joe can verify if it is still available. The e-mail light just flashed. Guess your pictures are here.

          Correction - the p/n is 5573979

The correct part number is 5573979, not 5574979. Sorry about the error.

Thanks to Gregg Madden and Duke Williams for their off-line comments. Since this car had a spin-on filter and adapter when I purchased it, I decided to look in the box I threw it in, I mean stored it in, when I went back to the canister type filter. Guess what I found? The little bypass valve disk. When I removed the spin-on filter adapter last month I didn’t even notice it was sitting on top of the adapter. How it got there I may never know, but at least I know it isn't floating around somewhere inside my engine! I'll be ordering a complete valve assembly tomorrow. Lessons learned: 1. Never throw anything away you take off your Corvette 2. When in doubt ask the discussion board!

            Thanks

              Ron----

Well, it looks like this mystery got solved before I got back to the board. In any event, thanks for the pictures which you e-mailed. That is always VERY helpful when I'm trying to figure something out. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words.

Anyway, the part number for the adapter is GM #5573979. This adapter was used from 1956 through 1967 on all Chevrolet V-8 engines and, interestingly, is made of magnesium. Unfortunately, it is GM-discontinued, but it was actually available until about 2 or 3 years ago. No problem, though, as you can get this part from most of the Corvette vendors. I know that Dr. Rebuild carries them and I'm sure that most of the others do, too. They cost about $25 which is about what they were from GM when discontinued.
