If you have a song that Britney Spears wants to record, it is about a day.
Really shoots a hole in copyright protection, and especially the "poor man's notary" service of using a sealed mailed envelope postmarked by the US Postal Service.
The day's of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" are over apparently.
Then again, it is the deep pockets of Britney against the empty ones of the guy from Indiana, so it would be GM's deep pockets against yours.

Intellectual property rights are a niche...
Mike's reference to music is one area of exception. There, it's recognized that 'artistic interpretation' can create an entirely new work from an existing copyrighted work using the same notes/lyrics simply by altering tempo, inflection, Etc...

There's a person and/or department at GM that has cognizance over this. You write and ask them for permission to republish. They'll more than likely grant you the permission if the part you wish to republish is short; won't cause them to lose revenue; and, you give them credit for it. It's a common request. Search around their web site for the office to which you send these requests. They'll probably reply back with a form.
"Brochure shot"? What's that? GM does have an office that does nothing but sell old GM photos. You can buy them online. They won't let you republish one of them.Comment

John, Yes GM does protect their copyrights very closely and would/will come down on you/anyone for using said copyrighted material without permission. Basically, and I emphasise basically, they are protective of their names, Chevrolet, Corvette, Suburban, etc, which are all copyrightted, and they will scrutinize any outside request to use THEIR names.
However because of the shifting sands within GM, I can't tell you exactly who to contact for getting their permission to use one. If I were you I would start by contacting their Licensing agent to become a licensee. The name of the Agent is EMI, Equity Management Inc. and can be reached at 248-680-8757.
