      Dan,
      I have a 66 w/ac as well. My car does not have the sheet metal bracket. My guess it was added to repair some damage. What serial number is your car? I can send a picture of my hood if you want to compare.

              Noland's book has a clear picture and exlpanation.
              The hoods inside framing has a slot cut into it, as yours seems to, to add a
              reinforcement plate for the bolts to pass through the support, then the fiberglas, then the plate, to be nutted on the inside of the channel. No external metal piece.

                  Here are two pics of my hood. The work that looks like I would do in my back yard is the hole cut for the hardware in the side of the hood re inforcement which is rough.

                      Thanks Frank, I think I am going to remove my sheet metal bracket, and I bet I'll find some broken glass.
