    C-1 283 Rods

I was able to aquire a NOS 519 fitted block without rods. Any ideas as to what rods I should buy for this engine and cost? Thanks in advance

Why not get good used originals? Have your machine shop resize them. They should be cheap as they are plentiful.

      Jerry-----

Well, you can't purchase any new rods from GM for this engine. The small journal rods have been long-since discontinued.

Depending upon what you want to do with the engine pretty much determines "what to do" regarding rods. You can use remanufactured original rods. However, I absolutely do not recommend ANY of the 283 rods or the earlier 327 rods. If you use reconditioned rods, you ONLY wnat to use the GM #3864881 rods. These were used in PRODUCTION for later 327s (beginning in later 1965). It's very hard to describe these rods, but competent engine professionals will know how. If you use reconditioned original rods, tell them that the late 327 rods are the ONLY ones you want to use.

Otherwise, I'd go with a set of aftermarket new rods. You don't need high dollar type rods for your application, though. The offerings from Scat or Eagle, although many of these are imported, will do you just fine and will be superior to the '881' rods, too.

Another option: check to see if forged powder metal rods are on the market yet for small journal applications. This is really the way to go if they're out there. Check with Howard's Cams or Competition Products (NOT the same as Competition Cams).

        Addendum

When I say LATE 327 rods, I mean the '881' rods used from about mid-1965 through 1967. The REAL late 327 rods (1968-69) are large journal and won't work with your 283 crank.

i often wonder why no ones makes

a thicker insert rod bearing so the later model 2.100 dia big end rods could be used in the engines with the 2.000 crankpin like they do mains to put 350 cranks in 400 blocks

You're correct; they did once offer the reconditioned late 327 small journal rods under GM #12333077. However, they were discontinued several years ago.

Go here for the thicker bearing for use on 2.1 rods and a 2.00 crank pin http://www.holley.com/products.asp?product=CR867HP

That's good information. That makes things much easier for "small journal rod guys". In that case, they can use rods GM #10108688 also available as a set of 8 under GM #12495071. These are forged powder metal rods that replace all earlier large journal small block rods, including the so-called pink rods. They are a great value, too. The set GM lists for about 300 bucks.

However, anyone using these rods (or, ANY large journal rods with these special conversion bearings) would need to check for interference between the rod and the block as the crankshaft is rotated. If any interference is noted, then appropriate relieving of the block would be necessary. I don't know if this would actually occur, or not, but it would be prudent to check for it.
