Heres one for you numbers and codes experts. A buddy of mine called me and said he's found a 78 ot 79 GMC pickup with what he has been told is a 427 original motor. I asked for block and pad numbers and as he is new to this game he said he had something better. He told me there is a plate inside GMC pickup gloveboxes that has a code that tells you everything you'd ever want to know about the motor( except if it's still the one in the truck) Anyway the code he gave me was L43801 any of you production code GURUS know what that is supposed to be? GM never put 427 in pickups only in dump trucks and they were "tall blocks"

Chevy or GMC never made a 427 motor for the 78/79 pickups. The 427 was still being offered in the medium duty trucks. The 454 was available in the 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton pickups. As far as the tag in the glove box. it was a label that was put on the glove box door at the factory that listed all the RPO's (regular production options) that came on the truck. I believe the L43 was a 350 cid with 4bbl. Hope this helps.
