    Shipping Engines

I just bought an engine on EBay. 327 small block and 2 heads. Now I've got to get it from Pontiac, Michigan to Boston, Massachusetts. Seller states he'll deliver it to a trucking firm and strap it to a pallet.

Any advice on how to do this? What firm to use? Best practices? Pitfalls?

Any of the national firms will work..

Unless you have a fork lift, I would arrange to have FOB to the trucking company location, then you will need a truck, then be prepared to unload it at your location. (lot of friends) or a fork lift.

Check with Fedex Ground. They are very competitive, they bought up several large trucking companies. I had an engine shipped from Texas to Michigan. Cost approx $220.00 Put the engine on a wooden skid, strapped down. Skid should be larger than engine, so it can be picked-up with a Hi-Lo. After strapping it down, wrap it with shrink-wrap.

So you did the buy-it-now on the engine on ebay! I thought that was a pretty good buy for an early 62 unit like that!
        Good luck!

Rainer is correct, FEDEX does a great job and is very easy to deal with, the long-haul carriers may be less expensive but less flexible.

          Yellow Freight.
          Con-Way.
          Tower Air.
          Roadway.
          Consolidated.

From Jim Pace chev in Ohio to NJ via Yellow Frieght to their terminal was about 100$ 2 years ago. They fork lifted into my truck and the deal was done.

Be sure to arrange shipping that is prepaid (reference previous post about FOB). Shipping freight collect will double the cost. Also, if at all possible, specify pickup at a freight terminal close to you, not delivery to your home. Home delivery will also increase the cost considerably. Strap to a pallet and shrink wrap.

Thanks, Mike. The dates were too good to pass up. Within a day or 2 of what I felt the casting date should be based on other cars around my serial number. The machining date is also 1-2 days away from where I wanted.

It's an "SB" motor. As I said, I like the date stamped on the pad. But I don't like the "SB" suffix. What do you think I should do with that?

Anybody know how to make an "SB" into an "RD" or "RE"?
