    Re: 63 T10

Anyone know when the tail shaft went from cast iron to aluminum on the 57 T-10?

      Joe-----

I was not aware that there ever was a cast iron extension housing used for a T-10. So, if there was one, I'll be interested to learn about it.

The first 3 were requested on an

Engineering Build Order on 11-12-56. And, to anticipate your next question, 3 aluminum MAIN cases were requested on a Build Order dated
        2-21-57.

57 vette lovers have heard rumors for years that the initial t-10s were built with cast iron tail housings and i recall seeing one at bloomington or carlisle or cyprus years ago. mike

            all cast iron T-10

Joe..I don't have many details on the early all cast iron T-10..but I believe it was the first or one of the first available. See picture below.

I have one in my 54 George Moore / Eb Rose car that was transplanted along with the 57 FI Black Widow motor in late 57...from one of the cars Ed Cole sold to Eb Rose after the June AMA ban. Eb Rose received 3 cars.. two of the stock body 57 Sebring cars and the Bill Mitchell SR2..all for the princely price of $1 each..when SEDCO was shutdown.

I believe the unit in my 54 is dated early March which would have been just prior to Sebring. I would think that the 4-spds installed in the 57 Blackwidow Chevy's would also have been all cast iron for the Feb. Grand National Daytona Beach race..but not sure. Parts were being shipped up to the last minute before the Sebring race and even directly to Fred Warners ( Corvettes 1st PR man ) Sebring motel.

I can just imagine the group of players Ed Cole, Duntov, Burrell, Yunick, Mauri Rose, Fred Warner, Bob Clift,Dick Thompson, Rathmann and a team of others..the SS car arriving late, the Bill Mitchell SR2 the 2 new production bodied fuelies # 3 and #4 ..it must have really been something. Lots of Power, ego and heat!

Loren..11/12/56 was my 4th birthday! I did not get an all cast iron T-10 as a gift!

Thanks.. for the details. I imagine these early units are kind of rare...especially an all aluminmun early 57 unit.

This week I talked to the son of the guy that built the prototype 57 Blackwidow Chevy that Vince Piggins used as the model for the Grand National cars he built at SEDCO.

              Lots of untold history.

Mike..I don't think so..but I will look. Are you curious to see if the cast iron output shaft area has the same cut out as the aluminum tailshaft.

Mike..when the weather breaks..I will get up underneath the 54 and take some pictures. I was anticipating your question..and I don't know the answer without looking. My guess is the notch is not there.
