"The Calcutta Auction was a form of gambling, but in this instance, 25% of the money was donated to a childrens charity". (75% was awarded to the drivers..Joe)
"Lady Randfurly was the wife of the Governor of the Bahamas. In the 1950's the Bahamas was one of many British colonies, and as such Britain appointed a Governor of each territory to oversee local government and protect British interests. A quaint idea don't you think?
Lady Randfurly was very keen on helping the local population so set up a charity to help local children."
"The Auction was certainly held in 1955 and 1956, but I can find no mention of it after that. Possibly it did not happen, as the Hon Earl and Lady Randfurly were replaced Sir Raynor Arthur and his wife sometime in 1957"
