    76 restoration

My first restoration. (female) Car stripped already. So do I wet sand, spray gelcoat on using...(regular spray gun?) then wet sand, primer, primer, primer, then wet sand, then paint? Want to do a nice job and have really shinny car. Is that just a good wax job? Any help or suggestions or paint types? Etc. Thanks a lot. Carole

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a NCRS TF resto then you'll be looking for a paint job that "appears to be lacquer" and not overly smooth. Judges like to see bonding strips lines, waves, etc. like it left the factory. Like Dale Pearman used to say when someone block sanded a Corvette smooth, "congratulations, you've just ruined another Corvette.

With that being said it's really up to you. If you want it shiny as you can get it then I'd say a single stage urethane or base/clear is the way to go. I love lacquer and even an amateur like me can spray it, it's just not as durable as the more modern paints. I elected to use base/clear on my car even though it wouldn't judge real well because it's very shiny but that's what I wanted.

Corvettes weren't gel coated originally except for the 53s. If there are no cracks I'd spray some PPG K36 or similar primer and started sanding it. You can use a spray bomb or guide coat powder to make sure it's nice and smooth.

I'm not a paint and body guy but have done a little. There are some guys on this board like Bill Williamson that do it for a living and are very skilled and experienced in Corvette painting. Maybe the pros will add something.
