A friend asked me if there was a problem with his going to a regional meet (in this case, St Louis next week) as a spectator. He was concerned about not being able to pay for admittance and get in if he is not an NCRS member. Is there an issue about non-NCRS members going to view an event as a spectator (or for that matter, NCRS members who are not registered for that event)?
Odd question about regional meet-spectators

A month or so ago, I realized that
my trip to Minnesota would involve these dates; I contacted a friend to ask if it would be a problem for me to stop in for 2 to 3 hours; he forwarded my request on because he was going to be en route to CA for a street rod show with another friend from Texas, and advised that I would be contacted.
I've now routed myself through Wyoming. Thanks for the non-contact.- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
Steve, The Regional meet in St. Louis will be held on the top level of the parking garage of the host hotel as was the last regional in St. Louis. Previously, when the meet has been held outdoors like this, no attempt to enforce 'NCRS members only' has been made although members are requested to register, and must register to attend seminars. Controlling spectators in such a venue is impractical. We have been more strict when holding an indoor event like those held previously in Joplin and Collinsville where foot traffic may be more closely monitored. I encourage everyone to come. I'd like to put faces to some of the names I see on this board. I would hope members would register but as far as I know, no one will be checking IDs on the judging field. As for Loren, I'm sorry his questions weren't answered. I don't know who his friend contacted but I'd suggest next time he omit the middle-man; contact information for the meet is easily obtained. If you want something more official, contact Dana Forrester, he's in charge of registration.- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
OK, Bernard, your answer seems a little at odds with some of the other responses, but makes me feel less crazy for my confusion! You are thinking I may have to "register" somehow as a spectator? I've looked at the flyer in the Driveline, which lists registration for Famiy/Adult, guest, swap, Banquet, Flight Judging, etc. Are you saying I need to register for the event ($50!) to walk through as a spectator on Saturday? As a member? Mowing is starting to look better all the time!
I sent Dana an email for clarification... thanks for your input.- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
Steve, There is no "spectator" class of registration. There are registered NCRS member attendees and there are people who are attracted to the pretty cars. Some of the people attracted to the pretty cars might be NCRS members that have failed to register. The official line is that you must register to attend ANY NCRS event. This is partly for insurance purposes. It is also to help defray the cost of putting on such an event, which is substantial and is borne by the sponsoring chapter(s). The reality of the situation of an outdoor meet does not lend itself to strict enforcement of this rule.- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
The key was this person was not an NCRS member. I have seen all the hotel staff from the janitor to the manager walk thru the meets and anyone else who happens by and causes no problem to walk thru. If their is a charge for vistors so be it and if not we should encorage vistors who may become members.I would mow also before paying $50. for a 1/2 hour walk thru to see if I might want to join NCRS or look at how NCRS members restore their Corvettes.

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
"The official line is that you must register to attend ANY NCRS event." would more properly have been stated: "The official line is that all NCRS members must register to attend any NCRS event." I don't want to get into a pi..ing contest over semantics.- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
I had a chance to get about 2 days off for the Bowling Green National. After several emails to the, then President, of the NCRS. I was told I could attend as a member since I was not bringing a car or staying for the week.I drove the long distance to get there and was having a good time meeting the people from the NCRS that I had talked to in the past and on the internet. When the cocktail party came that night in the tent, I was told to leave by the very President who said it ok to attend. I would have been more than happy to have been told this before hand, the actual ways of his intent or to have payed to attend the party. But as it was, I drove only about 7 hrs. to be told to turn around and go home. He did appologize later the next day after I payed to enter the grounds as a spectator, I certainly didn't mind paying for that privilige, but I doubt if the feelings felt and the "told to not attent" feeling will ever go away. Come to think of it, I didn't see this member in attendance at the very first meet in Wapakoneta, Ohio. I was there, but not yet as a member. I would suggest getting permission in writing, before attending, so you don't face the embarrasment and frustration I did. Member #861- Top

Re: Odd question about regional meet-spectators
I payed my $50 for the St Louis regional and will put this person on my registration for $15. as a non member guest and all I know about him is he is not a member and would like to attend and I said he could.
Maybe it is the right time to let members who would like to stop by a regional for 1/2 day sign up at the meet for some portion of the $50.for a four hour stay.
I know this would be a change that would need board approval but it could help attendance.
