I remember some talk a while back about what the correct ignition coil p/n was for the L36 in 69 and that it was used in PRODUCTION ONLY. This meant that the service replacement that you bought over the counter was different than that on the car in the show room behind you.
I did a search but couldn't find this info so if someone could educate me on this I'd appreciate it.
The ignition coil part number/derivative thereof stamped on the coil for 1969 L-36 was the part number for the coil + bracket assembly. This assembly was never available in SERVICE. Consequently, you could never purchase, in SERVICE, a coil which had the same part number/derivative thereof stamped on the coil. The PRODUCTION coil part number for standard ignition was GM #1115287 and the TI was GM #1115263.
In original SERVICE, the coil part number for standard ignition was GM #1115238 and for TI was GM #1115207.
While the numbers embossed on the "cans" of original coils were different for PRODUCTION and SERVICE, the "innerds" of the applicable PRODUCTION and SERVICE were the same.
Reproduction coils available today have the original part number/derivative thereof embossed on the can.
Yes, that's it. The 1968+ Corvette ignition coil brackets were unique to Corvettes. So, that IMPLIES that the the part number for the coil + bracket assembly, as used in PRODUCTION, for Corvettes was unique, too. I'm not 100% sure that the same part number was not used for other Chevrolet models, though.
