Re: Muncie id question
Terry --- Close; it's called the counter gear (GM). or, sometimes, cluster gear. It differed from the M20 only in 1965; M22 = 1.0" dia., M20 (close/wide) = 0.875".
If you believe Colvin, by 1966 model year, all counter shafts were 1"; therefore making this feature a differentiator only for the few M22's assembled in model year 1965. Kinda like drain plugs being a M22 marker only prior to 1970 MY.
I say "if you believe" because Colvin claims that after Feb 65, the tail housing changed to 3857584, but my '65 VIN # 14xx has a Sept 16/64 assembled M20 close ratio with this tailhousing w/date circle August, 3rd week. Also, he claims that the shifter rod attaching studs were coarse thread throughout 1965 MY; but mine are fine, on a "707" side cover w/cast circle Aug, 5th week.
