    68 pilot car?

I am interested in opinions on this car.

Is this a big deal or no? I'm not looking to purchase it, but just wanted to see what you guys thought, if you have time to comment. Sure is beautiful. Thanks.

I'm not any sort of an expert but

I thought only 69s had side pipes?

    Nice looking car, though.

      Re: 68 pilot car?

Yes, no side pipes in 68.

Also, it was my understanding that no coupes were shipped until January or so because they had so much trouble with the fit of the tops. I guess this could have been the one they found that problem on, but I doubt it. Wasn't the top originally supposed to be one piece but because of lack of body stiffness they had to go to the T top?

      Anyway, it's a base motor automatic 68. It's not a 67

Also, upon further review, this car has the interior door pulls that were added later in 68.

          Re: 68 pilot car?

I wonder if it still has some of the early 1968 features:
          Smaller thin-wall vacuum hoses
          Smaller chin openings
Different configuration and location of vacuum overides
          Wiper over-ride warning light
          Low fuel warning light
          Smaller headlamp doors

I'm sure there are more, but this will do for the moment

Terry, would we not expect to see this car without openings in the lower valance, or very roughly hand cut if they do exist

Kevin has the TSB on the subject.

of the chin openings. If one had the real picture to look at one could see how much smaller and crudely cut they are than the later openings.

There is lots of neat stuff on early 1968 Corvettes -- I have seen a fender-mounted TI amplifier that I am sure was put there at St. Louis, but one has to wonder, how much of the early anomalies remain after the restoration.

Thanks for the tip Paul. I will look at that '68 later today.

TSB full view of valence panel slots

That TSB shown in Kevin's post has 5 pages of info on correcting problems of overheating on early '68 427's. Some of the modifications are:

-- full fan shrould effective VIN # 2489
-- smaller fan drive pulley @ VIN 0720
-- new fan clutch to raise slip speed @ VIN 1344
-- slots as shown in picture @ VIN 0720

Those lower grill trim moldings line up to the bumperetts a hell of a lot better than my late 68s do?:~

Looked at the McDorman early '68 yesterday. I believe that someone has "massaged" the lower valance openings. Were not rough cut like what I would have expected to see.
