black '72???

I recently saw a '72 for sale claimed to be a 'special' color code car that is factory black. Where it says paint on the body tag it is stamped 'special'. The owner claims that it is one of perhaps 25 that were painted black in '72.
Is this possible? Thanks for any feedback, Tim

I think 25 is too high a number for factory black in 1972. I can't find the reference at the moment, but the number of SPEC cars is around 25, I think.

I have seen 1972s (note plural) which evidently were painted black at St. Louis. I have seen many more which appeared to have been painted black after they left St. Louis in primer. One has to check the original paint carefully to determine the distinction. Of course, once the original paint is gone, so is all the evidence.

Is black possible from St. Louis in 1972? -- yes. Also possible in 1971.

Most SPEC paint was delivered to the dealer in primer. In 73 their was a special order of 73's painted black at the factory and noted as such on the tank sticker and in the Black Book. I know of no 72's painted black from St Louis on a one off basis.
