sorry last message was titled wrong. I an trying to ID my engine it is not correct, and the engine ID plane on the front of the block passenger side has been milled smooth. It is stamped .040 which I know is 40 over. but there is another number .007 which I thought may be the under size for the rod bearings. The plane is short so i know it is a later model block. I checked the engine and the only number I noticed was the casting number on the rear drivers side which is 3970010.I checked all my books and cant come up with anything. I need to know if this is a 350 305 two or 4 bolt main. I really didnt want to take it apart if it is junk. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

Re: engine ID
3970010 is the casting number for the long used Chevy 350 block. But, a raw casting number -> a finished engine part number once secondary operations were performed (drill and tap) and the engine internal components were selected and installed to meet a particular performance/application profile.
So, what you know from reading the casting number is what you've got started life as ONE form or another of MANY different 350 engine configurations. To really know what it is today (2-bolt/4-bolt mains, Etc.) you have to consult the mechanic who built it or tear into it....- Top

Re: engine ID
The 3970010 block was used for millions of 350's, in both 2-bolt and 4-bolt configurations, from 1969 through 1979; with the pad decked its exact usage becomes difficult to pin down, but there's a casting date code about six inches toward the passenger side from the distributor that will tell you when it was cast.- Top
