    Phoenix Eng. Rebuilders

Thinking of buying a motor for my 56 Belair from these guys. Anyone have any experience or heard anything about them. They are big on E-bay. Thanks to all

I think that was the group who built engines for the Trax Auto Parts stores in Chicago. I had problems with one for my Suburban, they wouldn't stand behind it.

I'd have to look it up to see, but I think that was them.

I don't have any experience with them but if their are in Pheonix, AZ you could check the AZ BBB site...

What engine are you looking to put in your '56?

Mike I e-mailed some of their customers who left positive feedback on e-bay and guess what, a few months down the road and some are no longer as happy as they were when the gave the feedback! Think I'll keep looking for a block and have my local speed shop build me a motor!

            Thanks to all

              Don,

There are lots of choices out there. If you want someone in Phoenix I have a good recommendation for a shop who built the small block presently in my car. But as I recall you are an east coast guy. In that case I recommend famous race driver and builder Pat Musi in Carteret, NJ. His business builds lots of engines in a fully-equipped shop and not all are for racing. He is a hell of a nice guy too. Contact Pat at 732-541-1919. His daughter Rose runs the front office. His place is worth a visit. The works in progress (including several beautiful Corvettes) are something to see.

On a less glamourous note I've had good work done by a much smaller shop in Amityville, Long Island known as Engine House. If interested let me know and I'll dig up that number.

                Re: Phoenix Eng. Rebuilders

I view these engines supplied by chain auto parts stores and the vendors that supply them as just a motor. Nothing great, maybe not too bad. It is used to make a vehicle go forward and not much else. In Advanced Auto Parts one time, I saw a SBC with the left side going .020, .040, .040, and .060 on the pistons. Wonder if they balanced that?

If you want an engine that runs, you need to build it, or have it built by someone you know something about.

Since your brother is in the auto body business, he probably has enough contacts with car people to know who is a decent machine shop and who isn't.

Then decide what you want, write it down, take it to the shop, and find out 1)how much, 2) if they recommend anything different, 3) if they will do it or not, and 4) how long.

If you are lucky enough to get the names of several good shops, then shop all of them to find out price and what they have to say. Cheapest isn't necessarily the best indicator, but often what they say. If one's price is way out of line with the others, there needs to be a very good reason.

Mike, You are right, I went to a local speed/machine/engine build shop who diagnosed and corrected the head problems in my 60 after the original engine builder failed on three attempts.

He used to bore my Harley Davidson cylinders when I had a bike shop. He was able to hold the cylinder bore dimension from top of cylinder to botton to .0002 of a thousand of an inch.

I am going to have him build me a motor. I figure if anything goes wrong at least he's local and been around for 30+ years in the same location. Tells me 7-10 day turn around and a better price with him supplying the core, aluminum intake and a Holley 600 than I paid the last guy for just the rebuild.
