Factory body mount shim procedure?

Hi all,

I used Noland Adams' figure to dutifully record all my shim info for restoring my 1960. However, I am curious about a couple of things:

(1) What procedure did the factory use to determine the amount of shimming needed?

(2) What determined the use of the metal shims versus the cardboard?

"What determined the use of the metal shims versus the cardboard?"- Rubber was just to cushion it the metal shims used to close the rear door gap. No real need to worry about the original shims , when you replace the body back on the doors is what determines shim amount and location

Bob -

C1 frames were measured and marked for shims in a fixture at the beginning of the moving frame upside-down line; this process moved to the stationary frame upside-down "buck" ahead of the moving conveyor for the C2.

Do you know if that procedure was applied to Passenger cars as well?

I don't recall, but I would think so; I was never heavily involved with full-frame passenger cars - just unitized bodies, Corvettes, and half-frame Camaros.

Just for the record, I've never encountered any "shim directive" markings on any of the full size frames I've seen. That's why I asked. I know shims were used though. Maybe they just figured it out as they put it together.....?
