    Re: UPS insurance cost

I am with you John. UPS gives me great service. I have had one claim with them in 20 years. They paid me $500 for a 67 shifter console back in 1988!
FEDEX is unreliable-they take 2 days for cross town shipping, arrive late or not at all to pick packages up. It tried to use FEDEX to lower costs but gave up on them. Make friends with the driver-they wiil treat you as good as you treat them.

      The rest of the story

I called the UPS 800 line this morning. I got a custormer service person (a real human being) on the line. He listened to my story and concluded this: an individual UPS Store is free to charge whatever they want for insurance.

I reminded him that the UPS website estimated that $5,000 insurance for this package AT A UPS STORE location would cost $40. This UPS store in El Cajon, CA, had charged me $85.75 for $5,000 insurance instead. I asked him if UPS was okay with this. He said he was sorry for this "inconvenience" to me, but their insurance charge was not unacceptable to UPS.

I told him I'd never knowingly use UPS again, and wished him a good day. I did not tell him UPS can rot in Hell, but that's sure what I was thinking. And as for UPS Store #4144 in El Cajon, CA, I hope you need Rochester FI repair at some point in the future. It will be my pleasure to serve you.

        Jerry

A few years back a UPS delivery truck ran over and killed my dog. I was out of town at the time and got the bad news by phone from my wife.

When I got home I called UPS to this discuss this..they said my dog ran underneath the trucks tires! No we're sorry or can we compensate you in some way or anything.

You can imagine my feelings for UPS!

Re: The rest of the story

Jerry, So we learned something about UPS stores today from you. Just called a UPS store near Clem and they quoted me 2.00 per hundred!!. So then I called UPS and verified that I pay .50 /hundred. Then I asked same qt as your Jerry as to why the high rate at the UPS store and the operator said the stores have their own system of declaring value. So I can see why some are upset. I am not 'cause I don't use the stores. I don't charge my customers extra for insurance though. Except for RJ. Meanwhile as a business owner I shouldn't be on this post anyhow. But just want to clear up the mess. You customer in CA should be happy cause he got a quarter discount.!!! Back to work. John

            UPS vs. Fedex

I figured I'd give it a try. Today I shipped two boxes, one UPS and one Fedex. They went to the same location, weighed the same and had the same insurance.

UPS was $24.00 at the store and Fedex was $12.00 at the Fedex location. Half price.

            I think I'm now a Fedex shipper.

I vote Fed-Ex also. U.P.S. has been out of line for years.I have had more damaged part's over the yrs. with ups than you can imagine. And the driver attitude is a big problem with ups also.I try to avoid ups all together. If I have small item's I use the postal service now. Tom

                Re: UPS vs. Fedex

Harry, You went to a UPS Store? They are franchisees who charge what they want. If you had gone to a UPS terminal the price would have been in line. I tried FEDEX for a short while because the prices were a little lower. I ship a few packages daily. The poor service from FEDEX made me switch back. Between regularly not showing up on the day they were scheduled for a pickup-the excuse once was that it was snowing in Memphis, but my shop is 2 miles away from the FEDEX teminal in Fort Lauderdale. No snow. Also taking 2 or 3 days to deliver across town-the excuse was that the drivers were independent contractors. Good Luck.

Ken, the store is 4 miles from the house, the terminal is 35 miles away. The terminal is probably better priced.

Re: UPS vs. Fedex for rates

Harry I believe Kinko office supply stores are to FedEx what the UPS stores are to UPS, if you want to shop/compare non direct rates from both.

if you have computer you can ship USPS

without leaving your house. weight the package on the bathroom scale print the stamps on the computer and the USPS will pick up the package. never tried it but that is how the TV ad says it works

Harry: I been using FedeX ground for the past year. They are about 1/2 the cost of UPS. Shipping times are the same. I will continue with FedeX although they lost a set of PO2 wheel covers going to Canada. The claim was settled quickly and fairly.

                                Harry-----

I have found FedEx to be considerably less expensive. I'm basing it on using a UPS Store location versus a Kinko's-FedEx location, so I am comparing "apples-to-apples".

I've also found that FedEx ground is at least as fast as UPS ground. Plus, FedEx will deliver ground packages on Saturday----UPS does not. That means that if a package gets to the local terminal on Friday, you'll get it on Saturday. With UPS, if it gets to the local terminal on Friday, you get it on Monday.
