My 61 has been stored for years. I just drained the rear end and thought I should probably try to rinse the sludge out, if there is any. What should I use or should I just fill it back up,wait till I run it and dump it again after some miles when it is hot?. Thank you for your suggestions.

Re: 61 positraction
Richard,
I think if you let it drain good and refill the rear will be fine. If you would feel better about cleaning it out try one quart of diesel fuel and then drain and refill.- Top

Re: 61 positraction
As far as I know, all GM limited slip differentials have required the addition of a friction modifying additive with the gear oil. One four once bottle is required per differential fill.
I don't believe I would skip the additive...even for a temporary fill to warm up the differential for draining. At best, you can expect the differential to be noisy (clunking and grinding), and at worst, you could damage the clutch linings. OTOH, some of the old gear oil with additive will remain between the clutch plates; this may be enough to get the differential hot for draining. You should minimize turns if you want to try that, but the four once bottom is cheap at your GM dealer.
If you use the additive for the temporary fill, do about eight tight figure-eight turns to work the fresh gear oil and additive across the clutch plates. This will help to clean out the old lubricant and any sludge between the plates.- Top
