The Corvette Restorer- the latest generation

How do you like the latest generation of The Corvette Restorer magazine- as compared to the issues published during the John Amgwert years? Do you like "found my Corvette in a barn" stories? What do you think?

I received the Fall 06 issue last week. I like the new format. Much more informative than the old version.

After the first issued, I contacted Wayne

and indicated that previously, VINs had been included - which for me,
enabled me to include it in my data base. I also mentioned that in the past, a contact address had been included so that a member could get in touch directly with whoever wrote the story.
I was informed that while he was Editor, no VIN would EVER be published in the Restorer.

I agree. I think that the new format

looks too much like Corvette Fever or Vette magazine wannnabes. Call me old fashioned, but I would prefer the new paper quality and cover layout with the old format.

                Look of Restorer cover

I completely agree that the Restorer cover is starting to look like an imitation of Corvette Fever, which in my opinion is not a positive change. The Restorer is special and it should have a unique, non-commercial look to the cover, in particular.

I do like the quality of the new paper.

Re: After the first issued, I contacted Wayne

Did Wayne offer any reason as to why the VINs won't be published? What was the answer regarding the contact info for the author?

Re: The Corvette Restorer- the latest generation

Aww, Bill, the thin, slick paper in just different...you'll get used to it.

Anyway, I like the new paper, and I think it's higher quality...The Restorer doesn't feel like it's printed on recycled newsprint anymore. It's more like a real magazine now. It kind of has a Corvette Fever or Vette magazine flavor to it now...I don't know how that will wear with the organization long term, but it seems nice at first glance.

What I don't know is...where all the backlog of articles went...You guys must have been writing boring drivel. I see that the new editor (Waynbe Scraba) is having to write a bunch of fresh stuff himself to fill the pages.

Re: No reason given; no response about contacts

Loren, you are probably in the minority of people that really have a honest need for wanting to know the VIN.

There is currently a lot of concern about invasion of privacy, and identity theft. For this reason, most people attempt to obscure their license plate number whenever they post pictures of their cars on the internet, or they remove their plates completely. Why, I don't know...the number really belongs to the state anyway. I resist giving out my geographic location beyond "West Texas".

I'm not smart enough to figure out how a VIN could be used in fraud, but you have given examples yourself of how a small block car went to heaven, and came back as big block with the same VIN. . You would think crooked people would recognize that if a VIN is currently driving around, there is a greatly chance that the legitimate owner would stumble onto a fraud, but crooks are generally quite stupid.

I suggest that Wayne is trying to avoid NCRS contribution to such activity by barring the publishing of authentic VINS altogether. He really didn't set out to make things difficult for you...call him up if you want a specific VIN; he might share it if he knows you and he's permitted. I believe he just wants to avoid putting it out in the general public. :

I guess I don't see where your argument

comes into play regarding who/where the author is located. One of my TOTALLY UNBELIEVABLE NCRS moments was when I contacted Terry M. about who authored a story in the Restorer and his response was that he did not KNOW, as he had received the story from a Third Party......
I guess my feeling is that if you are not secure enough about what you know about your car, The Corvette Restorer has now become your venue. No checks, no balances.
Stand by for the first '67 L88 "prototype" in the first 1000 VINs.
The bottom line: he did NOT offer a reason for NOT giving a VIN; after 30+ years of VIRTUALLY REQUIRING VINs in the Driveline and in Restorer articles so that the reader can comment and contact, in my opinion, NCRS has taken a GIANT step backwards. Why am I not surprised?????

                              I agree Loren

Hi Loren I agree we may be going in that direction but I hope not. Ive been told that hes going to print WHAT he wants to and in reading this months restore YOU WONT BELIEVE THIS page 17 his first paragraph he tells it like it is. I was also told he will not print chapter results or other chapter events. I think hes doing a great job otherwise but he needs to be more accommodating to the old guide lines and what WE ALL liked and are use to!!!!!!!!!!I hope hes not going to be the Soup Gestapo of the restore.
