transmission removal

I am pulling the transmission out of my 63 and the service manual say's to insert two studs in the top holes of the transmission to aid in removal and keep the clutch disc from being damaged. Can anyone tell me how long to make these studs so as to completely get the input shaft out of the clutch disc.

I use 1/2" shank bolts with the heads cut off, then rounded off, and hacksaw a screwdriver slot in the end to ease removal. Don't forget to plug the output shaft to keep the lube in the tranny (that's the orange plastic thing).
