I have a car that sat for about 27 years with leaded gas in it which lacquered the inside of the tank. I wanted to clean it, but not remove the tank.
So, if anyone out there has a similar situation, this is what worked.
I fabricated a flexible stick with a microfiber mop head on the end. I drained all the gas and took out the sending unit. I plugged the hole for the sending unit with a cork and tipped the car by jacking one side up. The with a fair amount of lacquer thinner and several applications and a couple of mop heads, the tank ended up like new inside. Fortunately, no rust. Hope these urls work for the pictures.
