Re: Last 1972 Corvette - Correction
***Disregard my prior post***
I decided tested the accuracy of the C3 Registry birthday calendar with my old 72 LT-1 convertible VIN.
Unfortunately it came back with the same results - coupe base engineBob- Top

My point was that to know if the car was a coupe or a convertible, you (or, someone else) has to find the car with serial number "27004" and observe if it's a coupe or convertible. At this point, an empirical determination is the only way to do it; there are no known GM records which will provide this information.
If, as Bob suggested, if someone has previously located the car and described its configuration and optional equipment, then that's great; they've done the work for you. However, I don't know of any such information being available. With all the various "registries" out there, I suppose it may be available. I don't follow these too much, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: There's always the Insurance Bureau records

I thought of that, too. However, it's a lot more complicated than that for a 1972. 1972 was the first year that the engine was coded into the VIN. So, there are 3 possible engine choices that the car could have. That would expand the number of VIN possibilities. So, one would have to run a total of 6 possible VIN numbers, 5 of which, of course, never existed.
Even if one had a contact that could provide such information, asking them to run all the possible combinations might be a bit much. While I do have contacts that could do this sort of thing for me, there's no way that I'd "use up" that sort of favor by asking them to do something for reasons as "frivolous" as this.
Plus, my guess is that even if it were done, it would come up "dry". In other words, NONE of the 6 possible VINs would be in the data base.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
