    Frame serial number

I have a 1961 Corvette I've owned since 1972. There was no VIN plate on the steering colum when I purchased it so the DMV issued a number so I could register it. I would like to be able to cut a small hole in the floor to be able to see the VIN number stamped on the frame. If anyone could tell me exactly where to do this I would really appreciate it.

    Thank You,

    Mike Makowski

Mike, I wouldn't cut the floor just to find the number. You can get it in other ways, it is on the driver side outside rail about two feet back from where it starts to curve up. Before you cut any of the body try to use mirrors, silly putty, or tencil tracings. First you will need to clean the top of the frame, a lot of crud collects there. Lightly rub it with steel wool or cleaning pads. With the silly putty you just let it lay over the number overnight and peel it off. It takes a little luck as the numbers are not always that clear even when the body is off. It is possible to loosen the bolts on the body mounts to jack the body up just a little.

Do NOT cut a hole in the floor. I made myself some wooden wedges that I drove between the fiberglass floor and the frame rail. The two stamps are under the driver's door on top of the frame rail. Clean the top of the frame rail with scotch brite and coat the rail with white shoe polish. After it dries rub it down with 600 grit or the scotch brite. Use a mirror and a flashlight and you should have no problem.

      Varooom!

Mike, they are located where the others have said and I have always found them on the left side of the frame rail under the drivers seat.If you look at the frame rail you'll see how it is two halves welded together. Look at the left side on top under the drivers seat. Both of my cars had two sets of numbers located about a foot apart.Sometimes if the frame is clean there you can feel the depression made by stamping the numbers.
