Please forgive me if this topic has been posted a million times, but Im a little confused. I'm painting my chassis and suspension parts on my 65 frame-on restoration. I have a bead blaster and I'm taking the parts (control arms etc) down to bare metal. Here's where I'm getting conflicing advice: if starting with bare metal do I need to use a self-etching primer and then paint the parts? I thought the self-etching primer was for rusted parts? Cant I apply a good paint directly to the bare metal? Also, can anyone recommend a correct black for suspension parts? from Eastwood? Thanks!

Re: parts paint help please
Jeff-----
Using a self-etching primer prior to the application of paint will provide for a more durable finish but self-etching primer is not for painting over previous corrosion. However, the original finish for chassis parts was not done with any sort of primer, at all-----it was simply paint applied to bare metal. In fact, I've found that using a primer followed by paint on chassis parts will produce a too thick looking finish. So, I recommend just using a good chassis paint over bare metal, just as was originally done.
I don't like the Eastwood chassis black. I think that it's way too glossy. Quanta System 5 paints and, specifically, their medium gloss, semi gloss, and semi flat are about right for various chassis components. All of the chassis components were not painted with the same degree of glossiness. Most brackets will be medium gloss or semi-flat. Trailing arms and front control arms will be more like semi-gloss.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
