    53 to 57 hood ajustment

First determine if you have the right amount of shims under the Radiator support ( body being pulled down to fare) Second the original hinge holes were not elongated at the hood bolts or the pop ups ( only the lower holes that mounts to the radiator support are.) Forward and back ,not up and down.

The hinges have TWO arms 53 to 57 not like the 58 up. One supports the hood the other pulls the hood front line down (goes over center). The two ( STOP) blocks on the body you move up or down that have Elongated holes are set to match the thickness of the hood glass.
Now the key to pulling the front hood line down on to the body (blocks) and compressing the pop up springs is that the second hinge arm go's over (center) when closing the hood.
First put some white grease on the pop up lips and see if it leave a mark on the underside of the hood when you close it, if not then the (over center hinge arm) dint pull down to compress the pop ups, loosen the hinge two bolts at the radiator support -tilt the hinge forward and try again .
If you still don't get the hood line down -add shims at both TOP bolt "only" that support the hood both sides. That will increase the hinge (over center arm) to add pressure pulling the hood line down on the pop ups.

It's best to do this with the rear two MALE hood assy removed so you don't have to keep releasing the hood (open) , that way you can just push the hood closed while looking to see if the front line is being pulled down at the same time.(the front hood line compresses when the hood is just closing.)

Try to see this in your mind and what should happen when you pull the hood release = The hood rear males should POP up and at the same time the front area should POP up to clear the front body. That is why the male pins have a spring and the front pop ups .

This can take time repositioning the hinges at the radiator support many times. The pop ups don't move around! But if they have elongated holes the pop up lip should just be so so higher so when the hood opens they push the hood up away from the front body line so when you lift the hood it don't hit the body. And remember that's why the hinge second arm pulls the hood down to compress the pop ups .

If a Corvette shows paint markings under the hood where the pop ups are that tells me it adjusted .
You've seen people elongate all the hinge holes even the pop up and put their hand under the hood front line so not to chip the paint when lifting the hood RIGHT? That's because they don't understand WHY the hinges have TWO arms !. One to hold the hood up and 2. The other to pull the hood front line down on the pop ups.
If I haven't made you understand what's happening please rep lie here

          Roy,
Thanks for this info. My 57 didn't have pop ups on it, but the hood sat very nicely to the body. So i got some pop ups to "make it right". After installing them, I couldn't get the hood to lay flat in the front. The pop ups kept the front edge up high. So I took em off and now they sit nicely in a box. Maybe with your helpful info I can put them on so they work correctly.
          Thanks,
          Dave B.

Thanks ! Many other people do also, I don't think NCRS puts on a shop talk about this at thier meets or body fit. I was an instructor years ago at Bloomington . I like talking about trouble shooting body problem and parts design. If your correct your hood problem may be you could put a talk session on for NCRS. Good luck with your hood.

My vette also did not have the pop ups and hood works ok. But I have purchased them and now am awaiting the correct bolts. I did not know the purpose of the popups until your post. All I knew is that if you did not want an NCRS deduction then you better have the popups.
