      Re: Sorry, Joe...

My very late 70, (499th from the last serial number) which I purchased in 73. Came with the gold cap with the label (71 cap). Years ago, I purchased the silver cap with Sealed as that is what the judges were looking for. Now when showing I just ask which cap they want to see and pull the other cap out of my back pocket. I do leave the Gold cap that I believe is original to the car on all the time. I have also found that other items on my car are 71 also such as turn signal and tilt levers.

That is the same style cap that is on my March 18th and April 20th built '71's.

            Chuck,

Thanks for your input. I enjoyed meeting you in San Antonio and really appreciated you answering all of my questions when you where judging the gray '70 convertible.

I learned quite a lot from my first NCRS event, and most of it was because you took the time to help when I had a question.

            Joe,

You are the Karnac of Corvettes! Every time I have a question, you have an answer. You'll be happy to know that I found an original, correctly dated, '70 LS5 clutch fan and fan blade. Thanks for the pictures and the details to help me!

I also appreciate everyone elses input. It's great to get all the angles.

I'm not sure if I'm just lucky, but I always get a very good response to my posts!

Can you post a picture of the cap that was installed on your 73 when you bought it? I'd like to see it.

While I may always have an answer, it may not always be the correct answer. That's why it's so good to get the input of others. I often learn as much from it (or, from the research that it spurs me to do) as anyone else. This 70 gas cap thing is a perfect example.

Joe. Sorry if I created some confusion. My car is a 70 which I purchased in 73. I just made mention to the year I purchased it as it hadn't changed hands much before that and it has been in my posession ever since.

                    Jerry and Warren-----

That's very good information. Apparently, the 3983384 cap was used for a longer period than I thought. There's absolutely no functional reason that it could not have been used, though. All 3 of the caps we discussed previously are functionally identical and 100% compatible with any 1970-71 Corvette.

It was me that created the confusion. I meant to say can you post a picture of the cap that was on your 1970 when you bought it in 1973?

Carr, it must have been another Chuck in San Antonio...unfortunately I didn't attend the San Antonio National. The last time I judged was at the 2005? Waco Regional. But, it is good to hear my namesake took the time to answer your questions in the finest tradition of the NCRS.

you guys have never seen a gold 71 cap with the red caution label. years ago when I had my cap restored I could tell that it was gold at one time and it had the red label on it. it is in the 4600 range, could be early 71?

I am not aware of a gold cap with the red and white label, but I am open to learning. There is still a lot to learn about Corvettes.
