    '69 Fiber optics ?

The rear fiber optics harness running behind the drivers seat has actually melted in two. Is there anyway to repair this other than replacing the entire rear harness? thx, Mike

    Mike----

Yes, there is. Fiber Optic repair kits are available from many of the Corvette vendors. My recollection is that, at least, Corvette Central carries them. Repair kits are not now and never were available from GM, though.

Bubba cut the optics about a foot from the engine side firewall. Then put in a new forward harness and just taped up the cut fiber optics.(didn't even use duct tape). Anyway, I tried splicing them back together. The repair kit just didn't transfer the light properly.

When performing this repair it is extremely important that BOTH ends of the fiber optic cables be cut off SQUARELY and butted-together snugly and securely.

          Joe,

I tried this repair awhile back. I actually "doublecut" each pair of optics to be certain they were perfectly aligned. I always thought that a ferrul of some type at each end of the repair would transfer the light much better. Could be the repair kits have improved since my attempt. Believe I purchased the kit from streetworks. They were very helpful. The fix just didn't work for me.

Mike, in addition to the information already provided, I might add that the original fiberoptic lead ends were polished after they were cut and the ferrule applied. If I were looking for info on splicing technology, I'd probably look ad the computer industry as f/o is used for high speed data links.

              Hey Mike:

I have admired your 69 often, it's a great ride and I have never had much luck with the repair kits either. Buy the loom, I'll give you a hand, ( not that you need my help ), if you like some weekend. You going to Coachman?

                Re: '69 Fiber optics ?

Thanks for the kind words and the offer, Jerry! I'm may just break down and buy a rear harness and do the whole back...Looks like splicing is just going to be too much of a PIA. If I'm in town, I'll plan on going to Coachman...I hadn't seen anything on it in any of the car mags for the last few months, so I assumed it was being sponsored..U92 radio, the primary sponsor, had changed hands, so I figured the new mgmt wasn't interested. About 3 weeks ago, I got a flyer in the mail, saying it was set for Sat only, instead of the 2 days...go figure. If we end up going, I'll drop you an email, maybe we can hook up at the show. TTYL, Mike

That's a good suggestion...Hmm..maybe I can kill two birds with one stone, and splice in a fiber-optic web link, give me something to do at shows other than reread the same car mags:-). STW, Mike
