C2 66 conv. carpet install question

    Re 66 convertible

I am in the middle of my carpet installation. At the rear corners of the luggage area there are vertical supports for the rear deck lid I'll call the cowl supports. Not sure if this is correct term. The molded carpet wheelwell piece have a flap that obviously goes up the face of this support.

What I need clarification on is the large flat piece that is glued to the floor and rear bulkhead. It also has some flaps. Do these flaps pass behind the cowl support and glue to the vertical bulkhead or do they make a 90 deg turn and come forward over the front of the cowl support.

The wheelwell pieces are about an 1" too long and if the flaps attach to the bulkhead as I suspect I have some t******* to do in the corners to allow the flap to pass behind the cowl support.

It stays flat against the back wall. And yess the well house pieces do require triming. Ya can see where by the curvature of the molded back sides as where trim is required.

      Randy,

Maybe these pics of original carpet will help you:

        Doug and Gene,

Thanks. Just what I needed. The extra long wheelwell pieces were confusing me.

          Randy,

Another tricky part is toward the front of the wheel well. The carpet is slit to go over the trim panel mounting bracket.

            Doug,

Thanks. Did those today and yes they were tricky.

How about your rear cutouts for the seats. I know the front is an inner flap but not much info on the rear. Flap on both sides of the strap or one large cutout to expose the strap.

Also I noticed my Al Knock jack cover carpet piece has 2 long excess vinyl trim pieces at the front. The judging guide says these are folded back on themselves to form a butt joint. Is that like your original?

Don't forget the "football" hole in the carpet around the console bolts that pass thru the luggage barrier.

                Randy,

Here is a picture of the jack cover:

On the rear seat track bolts, there is a flap on the inner on both sides and no flap on the outer. The track bolts directly to the floor:

                  Doug,

Thanks. On the jack cover I was set to snip the vinyl ends but saw the judging guide description of folding them over. I guess that's how the General did it.

Re the seat track mounting, I have a 66 and it is different than a 67. 66 uses a 2 hole strap that goes over the rear track and bolts to the floor. I see 67 uses a single mounting bracket.

Thanks again for the great pictures

Randy, do a search of the archives and you should find a lot of comments on the carpet installation for 66s. When I owned my 66 I redid my carpet out of necessity and I added my installation comments to those threads on carpet. IIRC, there are even photos of things like seat tracks, the back U bracket that hold the seat down, and the seat belt installation.

                        Jim,

The last photo is a picture of how carpet is cut for a 1967 car at the outer rear mounting point of the seat slider. I do not think this would be the same for a 65.

I think on a 65, there were brackets that mounted to the floor and the rear seat sliders slid under the brackets. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.
