    Larry,

    Yes, you are right about the filter not being the problem. I thought about it after I sent the post; any problems with the filter would be in the direction of "decreasing" the oil pressure. How about your oil? Is there any chance 50W oil could be coming out of your bottles labeled 30W?

    On the paper towels, I was thinking more along the lines of the cheap kitchen variety. I have used those to clean up the filter gasket surface and threaded pipe during oil changes until I noticed that they would snag on sharp corners; a 0.5" X 0.5" fragment would be torn off and left on the corner, just waiting for me to blithely screw the filter on.

      Plus -- I didn't see mentioned -- my '61 oil pressure gauge tops out at 60 pounds and I don't think running 80 pounds to it is a very good idea.
