    C2 Alternator 11-blade Fan Question

On the right; from 42 amp 1100696 5-G-2. Notice the softer radial pleats (compared to the left fan), but especially the drill holes at the "crotch" of the blades.

On the left, notice the sharp radial lines and the "MR" stamp on the widest blade. Can't remember what alternator this came on.

Are the variations just due to multiple suppliers ? The '65 TIM&JG doesn't go into this detail.

Re: C2 Alternator 11-blade Fan Question

Wayne - Not sure what happened to my response. It's in cyberspace somewhere or behind the copier.

Anyway the one on the left with the "MR" is interesting but the one on the right is typical of of the one piece alternator pulley/fan assemblies used on 1965 low-HP Chevrolets and base motor Corvettes. I think they used this basic design on alternators in the years 63 thru 1968 which differences in the diameter of the pulley portion for car applications with and without air conditioning and then in 1967 changed the fan to have more of a fluted/grooved design on surface. From my experiences, the 1965 pulley/fan assemblies generally did not have the part number stamped on them, but the 1966 and later pulley/fan assemblies did. In fact to prove stamping the numbers on the pulley/fan assemblies is not rocket science most of the time the numbers are stamped on the outside of the fan face but sometimes it's on the backside. Another Q: Integrated Pulley w/Fan use

Thanks, Pete. Here's a couple of 11-blade, one-piece pulley/fan assemblies. One on the left is stamped 3879568 on the backside close in on the hub. Note no radial fluting. This part # shows in '65 AIM as for air conditioning with base and L75 engines. But notice the '65 TIM&JG in the photo; NO integrated assemblies allowed !!

The fan/pulley on the right is 3909815_AJ, stamping visible on face of blades. Included it just because I have it; seems to have more limited Corvette applications; shows for '66-68 base engine ie:(exc. C.A.C.,427, Sp.H/Per.)

Back to 1965 MY for a minute. UPC C60 shows alt pulley for L76 (probably L79 as well) as # 3848023. Only thing I can find in parts books is that this # was replaced in service by 3846180 on 10-64 (this is not mentioned in the AIM). Now this latter (separate) pulley shows in the catalogs as 3_3/64" diameter, somewhat smaller than the 3_3/8" (barely shows in the table at the bottom edge of the pic) for L79 and L76. Any ideas on that ?

This pulley business gets quite frustrating.

The one on the right 9815 AJ

          Wayne,

is the one which came with my 67 base engine. Here it is coming out of the phosphate stew:

It once looked exactly like yours.
