1969 Non-AC console removal help needed

I am in the process of replacing my heater core and preparing the interior for Fatmat / carpets. So far I have successfully removed the center gauge cluster, parking brake surround (console) and the console shifter plate. What is now giving me fits is trying to figure out how to remove the console without getting too involved with the vent cables.
Is there a way to disconnect those cables, without dealing with the retaining washers, so I can completely remove my center console.

Please tell me there is, I am already beginning to think that I bit off more than I can chew so I could really use some good news.

    Thanks

27 views and nobody knows how to remove the console and leave the vent cables in place?

On later years the metal plate that the controls for the vents are mounted to can be pulled up and turned then it slides through the center of the console. I hope it's the same on a 69.

All you have to do is take the knobs off the cables. That will let you pull everything else up and away...I have had mine apart numerous times no problem.

He has the shifter plate off and is having a problem with the cables for the vents. The cables and that thin plate of metal are very hard to work with and he wants to not remove the clips. An AC corvette is lots easier to work on the console as their are no vent cables.
