Hey, guys. Have my speed nuts in hand. No wisecracks, please. How do I apply a speed nut to an emblem pin? It is a tight access. There are access ports in the bottom of the hood, but the pins are hard to reach, including the center pin with spiral grooves. Hood up and from the engine compartment?, or hood down from underneath through the front over the grill? Do I need any special tools? I hope the bumper doesn't have to come off. Please advise. Re: 1966 hood emblem revisited
Rich,
I am going from memory of 8-9 years ago, but when I refastened the speed nuts to the hood emblem of my 66 after painting I used a 1/4" drive extension and the appropriate size socket. Again from memory, I think I used a 7/16" socket. My longest extension was long enough to allow me to do this without a great deal of difficulty. I had the hood open and worked from the side and it seemed to work well.

A little trick I learned with my 65 is to put a small piece of masking tape with the sticky side against the socket on first then push the speed nut in and poke a hole thru the tape. This firmly holds the nut and you won't take a chance of losing it. I think my speed nuts took a 3/8 socket. I also worked from the side with the hood open. Good Luck- Top

You guys are going to hate me for this but I use a snug fit & just press the emblem in so that I can remove it easily for cleaning.66 Coupe

It is just that; a snug fit. If the holes are too big for that you can get barel clips (right name?) to put in the holes. I just don't know any other way to keep them & the paint underneath them detailed without a lot of effort.
Do the look for speed nuts during judging?66 Coupe

Re: 1966 hood emblem revisited
If you're using a new emblem, run the nuts on all the studs on the bench first to cut through the chrome and create starter threads on the studs, and the installation on the car will be quick and simple.- Top
