    C2 Exhaust System Replacement

    Hi all,

I am considering replacing my tired and somewhat worn out exhaust system all the way to the manifold and was hoping for recomendations as to where to buy the closet reproduction and especially which type material should I buy, ie. Aluminized, Stainless Steel..etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated as usual.

    Thanks,

    Craig Willetts

    Craig -

Corvette Central and Paragon both have excellent aluminized C2 systems - I installed a Paragon system on mine about four years ago. Paragon will make you a plain carbon steel system if you want on a special order basis, but they rust almost immediately. Given the kind of use our cars get, the aluminized system will outlast most of us, and won't rust to any significant degree.

      John,

I saw where Paragon sells a stainless steel unit that is guaranteed to never rust. I wonder if it's worth the extra amount verses the regualr alunimized model? Thanks for your help.

      Cheers,

      Craig

        Craig -

I guess if you're 20 years old and plan to live to 100, the stainless system MIGHT make sense.

Re: C2 Exhaust Replacement be carefull

I found that even when the repro houses claim the pipes are bent by a computer to the same form as an original pipe - that's not so! Take some time and check with other members, when I did that (after the fact) it was found that many problems still exist with correct stock fit.

There are two types of stainless steel normally used for exhaust systems, one will show some rust (have on my truck) while the other more expensive stainless will never show rust but is also stiffer and a little less user friendly for an exhaust system.

The sound is the next thing to consider (maybe the first). Al and stailess just sound different with the better sound going to the Al.

These are just things I've picked up over the past few years. I'm not an expert on this stuff so if somebody gets into the details follow their lead.

              Craig,

Log onto the internet and go to Allens Corvette Exhaust at www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com. I have their 2-1/2" welded, aluminized systems on my 1964 convertible and on my 1965 coupe and have installed the same system on other C2 cars for friends in my local chapter. They all fit well with a little tweaking to make them fit just right. The key is to take your time. I have a drive on lift in my garage which make installation much easier.

              Best Regards,

John .. How about sound? Using the same mufflers, does the exhaust sound differ between old steel, aluminized, and stainless?
