A few weeks ago my car was running bad, when I came home from a local show. When I got in the garage I left the lights off and looked under the hood, well I could see blue light around some of my reproduction wires. So I thought sure the wires need to be replaced they had been on about a year and I only drive it about 60 miles a month. And last year I had a mechanic do a complete tune up with cap points rotor plugs the repop wires and new fuel filter. So I pick up a new set of the black AC Delco wires, and put them on the car. Well my monthly cruise was coming up so I hop in the car and head out, the car seams to run a lot better real smooth. I get to the show and ready to leave the car starts running bad popping a little through the carburetor. So I get going home bout 30 miles back to the house and if I drive to give it to much gas it pops in the carburetor and then the fun part it dies at ever red light, so I think it must be the points? So I will put a set in and now the car will not crank it just spins over I put in a new set of the points and a new rotor. And was going to set the dwell later. But I can not get it to fire. A friend says that I need to pre set the points, and unless the box says preset. Well the only thing on the box is Mexico and Wells. Any ideas?

Re: C-3 points
I agree, take the cap off, loosen your point set, have someone turn it over by just bumping the starter a little, when the cam comes up to the highpoint on the point set ,put your feeler gauge in and tighten down your point set.I do not remember the setting but I would try about 16-18. Someone on the board will tell you the correct setting. But anyway that will take care of the problem! Tom- Top

Re: C-3 points
Not knowing a persons experience level sometimes people think of things that could of happened. With the new rotor installed, it could be installed 180 out. The quality of some rotors are different today than 30 years ago and in my opinion could be easier to install incorrectly.- Top

Re: C-3 points
That is a good tip on the rotor, the new one I put on still had a good enough square and round that it would only go in one way. I could see if the plastic was not shaped good one could put it on wrong. It was a old AC Delco that I had left. I wish I had some of the good old AC Delco points, need to look for some NOS and buy them when I can. I did get the car going this morning I backed off the points and it started right up, now where is that dwell meter. Thanks guys this board is the best!

Re: C-3 points
Good tip Dick
The only problem is finding the match book! You should see the kids in the parts house when you tell them you need a set of points, one would you believe ask me did it have electronic ignition! I was going to convert it over to the electronic conversion, but I think now I will just stink with points.
