No it address Dennis statement of rudeness as you described NCRS members as dead or dying members. Poorly chosen statement to describe ANYONE.

          Re: Recruiting Tool

Doug, I once believed as you do, but I'm not so sure of the recruiting angle anymore. I know the TDB has inspired some to join, but more just breeze in to draw on this technical teat, and then say, "Adios, Got mine".

Imagine, for example, that when you were younger, you had a lengthy relationship with your perfect partner. She wants to get married, and trys to bring it up ever so often. But, you're a little anxious about the subject, and refuse to talk about it...I mean, like, marriage is FOREVER!

Finally, after years of living with you, she says that's it, she'll be moving to another town. Are you ready to talk about it yet? Oh yeah, you probably would be ready to talk at that point, but long as you're getting IT for free, there is no urgency to talk, or to make a commitment.

Inspiration through lurking would still be available. However, exclusive access to the best Corvette restoration minds, (and juicy hard to find parts, if I can read between the lines) will no longer be free. Maybe non-members will be "inspired" to join up sooner if they're not getting "IT" for free. JMHO.

Re: Let me share a few thoughts...

This seems to be a peculiarity of western culture - an anomaly that may help lead to its downfall. "Those who fail to heed the lessons of history are bound to repeat it", so the saying goes. Most cultures over the eons revered their elders because they were the sole source of accumulated knowledge, especially those without written language.

There are a reasonable number of "younger folks" - say under 40 - in my local chapter, but I'd like to see it increase. The cars have a visceral appeal that will likely cross generations, but at today's prices they are much less affordable than 20 or 30 years ago.

That said I thought it was wise of NCRS to keep the TDB open to the public in the past because it's a good marketing tool, and certain non-members, like Clem, have a wealth of information to offer, and any interlopers can be dealt with by The Moderator.

Within the Cosworth Vega Owner's Accociation I am a "Technical Advisor" and my annual dues are waived. I maintain this status by answering online/email questions and contributing articles to the national publication, and I turned over the 200,000 word "Twin Cam Times Porfolio" that I wrote on the history and technology of the Cosworth Vega to the Club, and they sell it as part of the club merchandise program.

Perhaps NCRS can consider a similar status for guys like Clem.

Very true, we seem to have lost alot respect for each other. Not restricted to age just too much MTV, Jackass the movie etc. Don't get me wrong I'm all for the Animal House good ol boy stuff, (I was that soldier) Info is valuable and should be respected. Clem should get a pass, as anyone else worth their salt.

I have a different slant on this...

I have received my share of pertinent info on this board. BUT

I grew up in my 1955 Corvette, literally. I remember having to stand up to see out of it. My Dad was the second owner, his cousin the first, but Dad did all the maintenenance, so I am aware of details, learned from him, which are not in any book. The car itself is almost entirely original, except for the paint and engine block, so assembly details are quite "correct".

Many times I have gone down to the garage with a ruler, or digital camera, to answer a question posted here.

I already belong to the second-largest local Corvette club.

As others have pointed out, this free forum is an excellent recruiting tool. I find it hard to believe the operation of this forum is a financial hardship for the NCRS. The benefits of encouraging new members through this venue surely outweigh the cost.

I participate daily on another forum, which is owned and operated free for all by a one-man business, and it doesn't seem to be bankrupting him, despite the fact there are probably four times as many posts per day than this forum. He operates with one volunteer moderator, and two rules:

                          1) No selling or buying on the tech forum. There are classified pages for that. Repeat offenders are blocked.
                          2) No profanity. Certain words and phrases are automatically blocked, sometimes with hilarious results.

This has resulted in a technical forum which frankly exceeds this one in scope and detail.

(As an aside, I see The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal may be changing from paid viewing to free, to compete in the cyber world. I wonder why the NCRS would go the other way)

I have often wondered why posts here by NCRS team leaders and judges are so few and far between, unless they are doing so without revealing their credentials. If this forum changes to "paid members only", judges and team leaders should follow some minimum required participation level in order to maintain their NCRS credentials, and insure paying cusomers get their money's worth. If this page becomes a business, it had better be a good business, or it will die.

Surely you're not comparing NCRS to a church?

Besides, churches for the most part do not require payment for participation. Concerning the other forum I participate with, at one time the host was short, and appealed for donations, and people did. I really don't think this forum, useful as it is, can or should be equated with feeding the homeless, or supporting the elderly, etc.

get the snappy shirts and caps!
I think limiting public access to the forum probably takes on a flat earth view of the world. Kind of like we know the answers and do not need to seek outside opinions that may be contrary to ours. There are others outside of the members circles that can, do and have contributed to the advancement of our understanding of how these vehicles operate and how they were configured. No single organization possesses all of the knowledge. I have always had the humble view that no matter how big & strong and smart and handsome I am, there is always someone much bigger, stronger, smarter and marginally better looking than me. And I learned early on that Clem and many others were a bit sharper than me. I'm not sure if they are prettier than me though ) I'm still forever grateful to him for teaching me that you could use a bottom tap to pull a pilot bushing.

Re: Paying for the forum bites...

I belong to several different forums for everything from Mazdas to Subarus to Corvettes. This would be the only one that requires money. I have had to make contributions to keep some of the websites going and I had no problem with that.

                                The forum should be free.

I joined the NCRS for the Driveline and the Restorer. I've paid more for lesser magazines.

I really don't care about duplicating assembly line paint marks, overspray, sloppy blackout, or the exact shade of flat black (or is it semi-gloss?) on my vette. I think that stuff is interesting from a historical perspective but I just want to slap people that walk around pointing at obscure nuts on a person's vehicle and stating they're the wrong shade of whatever....or that the wing nut on their air cleaner is too big. Get a life.

I go to this forum for information on how stuff works and how to keep it working. If someone like Clem or Duke or whoever has some good dope to share, then let them share it!

I'm 50 years old, have no hair, and the forum should be free.
