Just purchased a 70 LT1 with 15K original miles. Motor has never been worked on. What do you guys reccomend as far as fuel? Will unleaded high test ruin the valve seats?? DO I need to put a lead additive in?? I will be driving this car to and from shows, but not a daily driver. Just don't want do any harm and need some suggestions from the pros. Thanks, Chris

Re: fuel
Chris,
First off nice find. I purchased one used in 72 with 14,000 miles. Wish I would have kept it so the story goes. Anyway, for the way you are going to use the car you should have no problem running premium pump gas in it. Make sure the valve adjustment is right. For a better drive I would suggest bypassing the solenoid next to the carb on the passenger side so that you have vacuum advance available in all gears. Car will run better, cooler, and better gas mileage. Enjoy.

Re: fuel
My original owner 68 327/350HP with 11:1 compression ratio was broken in on AMOCO premium when new and engine is still original with compression ratio the same as your LT-1 and no additives added, have only used pump premium fuel in the tank. Lots of unleaded premium has flowed through its gas lines. Has just over 98K on the odometer and runs great. The unleaded high test has not affected the performance. Read the owners manual and shift the gears at speeds recommended for 4-speeds and downshift to lower gear instead of "lugging" the engine.- Top

Re: fuel
John,
You just need a small private airport nearby with a fuel pump on the honor system. You fill your car up, stuff a check in the jar, make an entry in the logbook with the tail number of a plane and away you go.

Re: fuel
Jim, When my 63 FI car was at it's first show about a year ago at Marlborough a tall blond judge (guy) said to me. DeGregory what are you burning in that thing. Smells sweet he said. That's another characteristic of avaiation fuel should have been my answer instead of a smart remark. AV gas burns clean and smells sweet. Also make great spot remover for the carpet but is very hard on your hands. One drawback is that it is hard on the cheap buna rubber o'rings. So I use viton o'rings instead that Verle said aren't good enough for corn fuel. AV fuel evaporates very quickly though. Spill some and by the time you reach for the scott towels it's practically gone.
If you are a big time car collector or are putting you car in a museum you can't beat AV gas as it doesn't gel or turn to varnish. Not in a 100 years I am told. They have already unearthened old WWII planes with rusted out hulks that still had usuable fuel.
Since we are talking about plane fuel. Read the label the next time you buy fuel injector cleaner such as STP, etc. It says it's basically made from jet fuel. I picked some dirt or water up in the cheep gas in my GMC this past weekend. Wouldn't idle for crap and I was pulling my trailer. So I dumped some STP FI cleaner in it and in short order it was OK.
