Gas Mileage
I have two comments:
1. I periodically drive long distances on interstate highways - the ones with Mile Markers. I check the accuracy of my odometer over a stretch of 100 miles. Surprising how different vehicle's odomoter varies from these numbers - and how consistent the same vehicle's odometer reading is on various sections of the interstate. Having done it numerous times with different vehicles I feel fairly comfortable that the MMs are accurate. It might be interesting to verify your vehicle's odometer using this method.
2. Back in the early 70s I had a '71 Camaro with a 350 cu. in. 245 hp (2 barrel carb) 3.08 rear end, manual transmission. Generally the best mileage I could get was 16 mpg. During the peak of the "gas shortage" I drove from Santa Fe, NM to some place North of Denver, CO mostly on the I-25 going 50mph. For two tanks of gas I averaged slightly more than 20 mpg - this was a 25% improvement over my "normal" driving.
