    Gas Mileage

    I have two comments:

    1. I periodically drive long distances on interstate highways - the ones with Mile Markers. I check the accuracy of my odometer over a stretch of 100 miles. Surprising how different vehicle's odomoter varies from these numbers - and how consistent the same vehicle's odometer reading is on various sections of the interstate. Having done it numerous times with different vehicles I feel fairly comfortable that the MMs are accurate. It might be interesting to verify your vehicle's odometer using this method.

    2. Back in the early 70s I had a '71 Camaro with a 350 cu. in. 245 hp (2 barrel carb) 3.08 rear end, manual transmission. Generally the best mileage I could get was 16 mpg. During the peak of the "gas shortage" I drove from Santa Fe, NM to some place North of Denver, CO mostly on the I-25 going 50mph. For two tanks of gas I averaged slightly more than 20 mpg - this was a 25% improvement over my "normal" driving.

      Re: Gas Mileage

And I am sure that even doing a few other things, that you could have improved on that mpg. And they really are simple things to do. Make sure your car is in good tune, take all the extra unnecessary weight out of our cars keep the tires properly inflated. Take off slow and build up speed and try and not catch red lights. Then if you know you might sit for a few minutes cut the car off your just wasting gas at a idle, the list goes on but it all adds up to higher mileage when one practices the basics. It can be done

A new Z-06 weighs less than 3,200 pounds, NOT 3902. A 1983 Chevrolet Caprice weighs closer to 4,000 pounds than it does 3402.

          >

NONE of those things - "whizbang" spark plugs, the "Tornado FuelSaver", the "Miracle Nuclear-Magnetic Fuel Molecule Straightener", "Z-Max" and all the other junk on the market do ANYTHING to improve either economy or performance, and in fact almost all of them REDUCE economy and performance, but the fools who bought them are too embarrassed to admit that they got taken. If ANY of those things did ANYTHING to improve fuel economy, they'd be on all new cars from the factory - manufacturers would KILL for a tenth of a mile per gallon.

Your Caprice weighed 3506# when it was shipped with three gallons of fuel in the tank (and the Z06 is 2900#, not 3900#)

Yeah your right about the new ZO6 at 3185, but the caprice classic is in at 3402.

                    3402# is for the V-6; your V-8 is 3507#.

                      John,

I agree with you regarding your statement related to the "gadgets" - they really do not work. However, I believe the real reason that the American public has not seen highly fuel efficient automobiles also has to do with the petroleum industry and the heavy lobbying effort that they put forth. They are very strong and drastic improvements in fuel economy would have a somewhat negative effect on that industry. It's coming, just at a slower pace than we (the American public) would like to see......

Not really in the same ball park with discussion but the same issue. My '66 396/325hp Biscayne and my'66 Caprice 396/325hp have never treated me to much over 12MPG. Once with my Biscayne loaded to the hilt with my small block race engine and some extra heads, etc I got about 18/19 MPG headed to Santa Barbara, From Vancouver,Wa. This car was an Oregon State Police cruiser and was very comfortable at high speeds. "OF COURSE", I still have it, for more than 30+yrs.....Regards Frank
