C2 4Speed Shifter

I'm having problems shifting from 2nd to 3rd. When trans cold it won't shift. After a little driving it will normally shift. Appears that the linkage might require an adjustment. I have the neutral gate tool. However, there is very little room to reach the levers and loosen the jam nuts or even get to the c-spring clips.

Looks like I need to drop the rear trans mount to access the shifter. Any tricks to this otherwise?

dave: haven't ever needed to remove any pieces to adjust the shifter. get an oriental with tiney fingers to go up there for ya if ya can't do it with your hands. regards, mike

Can't speak to '63-5 but we just did this on two '67s (frame mounted shifter). One had side exhausts and we were able to get the tool inserted. Next tried it on my 67 with underbody exhaust and there was now way (they don't make hands that small). Fortunately I was changing my exhaust system and dropping the gas tank (to get to the tank sticker). With the access improved I was able to get the tool in & adjust the linkage- it made a big difference.
Before dropping the exhaust when we couldn't get the tool in we tried to 'eye ball' the adjustement- I would move the gear shift while a friend adjusted the levers- I can tell you that that doesn't work! Good luck. Jim Baker

Jim,

The shifter on a 67 is frame mounted while that on a 66 is transmission mounted. I would assume easier access on a 67.

If cold shifting is the problem I doubt and adjustment is going to fix the problem. This is normally a synro problem.

Transmission was just rebuilt. I can see the misalignment of the shifting rods at the shifter. Middle rod is a tight (not free) fit into its lever.

I think Wayne is right. Even if you adjust the linkage, you'll still hae a problem. You can adjust the shift linkage without using the tool just by the feel of the linkage if you understand the action of the linkage. That way, you don't have to remove anything and it's much quicker.
