    1967 Corvette

I'm guessing one needs to have a web site address in order to post a photograph. If that's the case, I can't provide the photo I'd hoped to, and so will try to describe the condition of the frame verbally. Except for brakes and exhaust (and possibly shocks), it's all original down there, and although she runs fine, she looks a wee bit scary down under. I would characterize it as moderate surface rust, grease, and road grime. There are some oil-soaked areas where a bad pan gasket allowed oil to coat adjacent portions of the frame, and surplus grease at various joints and grease fittings, and rust. The rust doesn't appear too pitted or deep, but it sure does look like a 40 year old car that's been driven 67,000 miles and never cleaned. My grandfather had an old International Harvester that looked cleaner than this.

I don't want to remove the body, but I do want to clean everything up as nicely as I can. I have the tank sticker for the car in a plastic sleeve in a 3-ring binder. Are there any other frame markings I should try to save before I begin cleaning? Any suggestions on the type of cleaning solutions I should use? Are power washing or steam cleaning viable options?

Keith ---- As far as cleaning solutions go, start with the mildest, least aggresive solutions you can find. Soap and water comes to mind as long as your water is soft and the soap is easily dissolved. Remember, you can clean it once and destroy exactly what you are trying to preserve or retain. Once its gone, there is no return.

        Keith,

Best cleaner to use on your car is plain Simple Green. A very neutral cleaner, works on almost anything. Most times the engine oil has a preservative effect on the engine parts and frame.

If you want to see the some numbers on your frame and get an idea of the condition of the frame, just take off the passenger side rocker molding, under the door.
Then just try a little Simple Green, take plenty of pictures. Preserve each screw you take out.

To post some pictures upload them to an image site at 640 X 480. I use Imageshack.com, there are others. Then post the direct image here or wherever, like this and below in the optional image link:

        That's a Top Flight driver, 67 327/300 64,000 miles, VIN 22049.

Would be interested in your frame pictures.
