    1969 Factory Alarm Question

    Hello;
    I have an early (10/1968) 1969. I need to replace the factory alarm cylinder and key located just above the CORVETTE letters in the rear. Question is...Is this lock cylinder/key unique to 1969 in design, mounting nut, etc or would any example from a 1969-1972 be correct ? I have access to an example from another hobbyist for an early 1970 and was wondering if this would be acceptable for judging.
    Thank you

    Re: 1969 Factory Alarm Question

    Greg - If your 1969 car uses a third key (small round head Brigg & Stratton key) to operate the alarm lock switch, the theft alarm lock switch assembly for 68-69 should be p/n 3937671. The 70s (except for for earlier production cars up to about s/n 11,757. Looks like early 70s used the same configuration as 68-69) and up used the oval head letter key that operated the compartment and spare tire locks to operate the theft alarm lock switch assembly which should be p/n 3986860.

    So, if the early 70 has the same kind of key your 69 has, the switch should be the same and if the mounting nuts differ you can use the one from you 69.

    Have fun.

    Pete

        Early switch is/was also available from Briggs and Stratton. I believe that the number from B & S ends in 111, I cannot remember the first numbers.

          The later switch that Pete describes (late 1970-1972 -- uses the same round key as the storage compartment and spare tire lock) is a larger diameter than the early B&S lock. Many folks enlarged the hole for this later, functionally improved, lock and reinstalling the smaller diameter lock then becomes a major task. The early lock has no seal from exhaust gasses, so periodic maintenance is necessary for any kind of longevity.

            This is the 68 to early 70 key switch. Notice the stepped bezel and protruding key cylinder. There is a reinforcing plate that fits between the backside of the panel and the nut.

              This is a late 70 - 77 keyswitch.

                  1969 Factory Alarm ANNECDOTE

                  When I originally ordered my 1969 new in the summer of 1969, I actually thought seriously about ordering the alarm system. Although I was trying to save as much money as possible on what was, at the time, a fabulously expensive car for working a college student, the alarm didn't really cost all that much extra. However, when I saw on in-stock, so-equipped Corvettes where they mounted the alarm switch, I INSTANTLY decided there was no way I'd want it. I told the salesman (who happened to be a personal friend of mine) that if the car even accidentally came through with that option installed, I didn't want it. So, I told him, be very careful when the final order form is filled out.

                    Well Joe where would you have put that on your Corvette on the side like the later cars?

                      Terry...

                      Is the seal you speak of the metal escutcheon piece with the tab? I have seen the later lock cylinders without it at times, and wondered if it was originally on all later rear mounted alarms.

                      I know that the rear of my 70's fiberglass has the hole with a notch. The escutcheon fits perfectly. Seemed to be original to me.
