    58 Transmission Tunnel Cover

Need some tips on trans tunnel cover fitting. My original cover was lost while at a restorer's shop several years back. I had removed the riveted metal shield from it at the time--so, I still have it. I purchased a new repo tunnel from corvette central but when trying to test fit I simply cannot imagine that it is suppose to be this difficult to make fit properly.

I checked the archives and found little info. Following are my problems:
    - how was the tunnel attached to floor (9-screws and with or without bonding adhesive)?
    - if you removed, how was this done? Did you have to remove the riveted metal shield first so that you could pull the tunnel backwards and up to clear the dash console housing bottom?
    - any reference points to make sure the shifter hole cutout is properly located (like X inches back from center console face)? I have the original tunnel "image" on the floorplan but the repo tunnel really doesn't come very close to fitting this old imagine area. I am just not sure of the fore or aft positioning so that the shifter cutout center is right. The body is off frame.
    - I have to pry and force the tunnel to fit under the center console. Pretty difficult to do. Then when in place the tunnel floor flanges are above the floorpan about 3/8 inches on both side? Maybe just a poorly formed tuneel? Or, maybe just a poor bodyman on my part?
