    Please help very urgent!!!!

I need so help ASAP! I have within the last 5 days removed, cleaned, and generaly freshend up the rear end of my 69. I replaced all the bushings, spring liners and repainted all that I could. When I put every thing back together and drove it I heard a noise!, at first I thought U-joints but they are less than a year old so I put it back in the air and found that the half shafts are hitting the yokes. I tryied to adjust the camber to see if i could make it stop, didn't work. The amount of friction is minamal but enough to be able to feel it when you spin the tires, how unsafe is this , can I drive to my mecanic? I am trying to make and drive (about 150 miles) to the winter regional in Orlando in 3 days!! please help

    Thanks,

Half shafts are hitting when it's in the air...yes. Not possible when it's on the ground. Look elsewhere....

Bruce, I lifted the suspension with floor jacks on each side at the same time so that all the weight of the car was on the jacks and they still hit , althogh not as bad!!

When you put the weight "on the wheels", do the wheels appear to be verticle or are they still tilted in at the bottom?

Ed the wheels are very slightly tilled in at the bottoms when I herd the noise it was only when the car was going over a bump or contour, but not under hard acceleration, but it is a big block and naturaly loud!

Did you replace and re-torque the front yoke biscuit?

NO , all I did to the diff was remove it and the cross member the only parts I left on the car were the trailing arms and strut rods trying to avoid this

Did you replace the 2 bolts, castle nuts, cotter pins in the yoke? Torque the spring hold down bolts ON the ground? You didn't break the ears off the diff case, did you?

It's possible, let's hope not, that you have broken one of the ears, or cracked it. You'll have to have the spare tire carrier off to really check...Who overhauled the rear end? Experienced person?

I did not have the diff rebuilt because I didn't think any thing was wrong with it, no noises, the only reason I did this was to clean it up( very dirty!!!) When I reinstaled the rear cover and spring I was very carefull not to hurt the cover, altough I may not have torqued the spring bolts enough

It is common for the joints to bind with the wheels hanging, but it will straighten out when the weight is on the wheels. What you have is poor alignment which is causing the binding. From the sound of it the camber is very much negative. Or the rear ride height is very high or very low.

When it's siting on the ground....What angle are the half shafts sitting at?
                            1...level from diff to wheel
2... sloping up from diff to wheel..or sloping down from diff to wheel?
They should be sloping down from diff to wheel with the wheel end of the half shaft at least a 1/2" below the diff. end

Well that I don't know right now but I will look first thing in the morning, I am off all week for the show, but still have other things to do to the car that involve driving it. Any idea how to adjust the half shafts other than with the camber? or do I just need to grind them down??

                              Thanks, Damon
