    '72 Auto. trans. pan question

    Hello All,

I'm helping a friend with his '72 (Base motor & Automatic) and I would like to know if the automatic transmision oil pan was originally painted engine colour or raw steel.

As always, thank-you for the help.

    Regards,
    Kurt N.

Raw steel, the leaks usually kept if from rusting.

If your friend has a driver, through experience I have found the GM replacement transmission pan for my 70 turbo 400 has been an outstanding replacement. The replacement pan is a thicker guage steel pan and seals so much better than the original turbo 400 transmission pan. My GM replacement pan solved my transmission fluid seeping problem. Keeps the underbody cleaner as well.

          Jim------

DEFINITELY. For a driver (or, even a show car that one doesn't want the chassis covered with transmission fluid), the current replacement GM transmission oil pan is the way to go. It took GM about 3 or 4 "iterations" to get this pan right; they absolutely DID NOT have it right as early as 1972. The current replacement is GM #8679995. It's about 90 bucks, GM list, and worth every penny.
