I have a 67 L79 no air or power steering. The Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide p.69 talks about the alternator adjusting bracket being painted gloss black. It doesn't say if the lower alternator mounting bracket is painted or is the end bracket they refer to as painted engine color the same thing they refer to as the lower alternator bracket. Also is gloss black the correct color for the upper bracket as I seem to remember seeing someones comment that it should be semi-flat or semi-gloss. Thank you for your comments.

Re: paint color for alternator brackets
Any accessory bracket that's shown in the A.I.M. with a part number was installed at St. Louis, and was dip-primed black; none were gloss black, and none were sprayed. Depending on which vendor supplied black flow-coat/dip primer that month, they varied from semi-flat to semi-gloss.- Top

Re: paint color for alternator brackets
Guys, if you take a close look at the AIM for '67, you will see that the lower alt bracket is shipped on the engine, therefore is painted engine orange. The top adjusting arm is added at St. Louis, painted black. I'll leave it to you to discern "how black", but the bottom is certainly not a part of the black discussion.- Top

Bill and Wayne-----
Yes, I totally agree. The lower alternator support used for many 66-71 small blocks, GM #3846565, was painted with the engine and was, consequently, Chevrolet orange. The upper curved adjusting brace was dip-painted semi-gloss black. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Jim------
For 1972, things changed. The alternator mounting system was revised and the alternator was mounted to a ductile cast iron bracket attached to the front accessory holes of the left side cylinder head. This bracket was of GM #3951337 (later GM #14015539) and was dip-painted semi-gloss black. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
