    1960 ignition shielding

The AIM appears to show the shielding brackets attached under the manifold bolts and on top of the french locks. Is this correct? If so,then obviously the locks can not be bent over on the bolts that have the brackets on them. Thanks, John

    John -

The french-locks always go directly under the bolt head - anything else in the sandwich goes below the french-lock, for just the reason you stated.

Thanks John, I figured that this was the case, but when it comes to judged items common sense does not allways serve you well. The JG made a statment that radio delete cars did not have the tabs bent over, and I was just checking.

I suspect the JG needs a revision - the tabs were bent over at Flint Engine, and they had no idea whether the engine was going to end up in a car with or without a radio; there is nothing anywhere in UPC 6 (base engine section) of the A.I.M. that indicates that the tabs are to be bent over by the assembly plant, and that is the "no-radio" condition.

That would be my thoughts too, it would seem that the assembly plant would unbend whatever tabs were necessary to install brackets or ground straps and the re-bend. John

            Where was the shielding installed?

Would St. Louis invest redundant labor to open the tabs, install shielding hardware, and then re-bend the tabs closed? I have observed an unmolested radio delete Corvette and the tabs were NOT bent! Who knows for sure?

Who knows? Sounds like a good research project if one could find enough unmolested no-radio cars to look at (unlikely after 40 years ). There's some good solid logic to Flint Engine leaving them un-bent, as (probably) 95% or more of the Corvettes built got radios, and needed 4 of the 8 end bolts pulled to insert the side shield supports under the locks. Surprised it doesn't show in the A.I.M. base engine section (no radio) or in the FOA 102 Radio section to bend them, though - the plant's manpower performance budget was based primarily on a buildup of labor content based on time studies of all operations shown in the A.I.M. necessary to build the car, and they normally screamed bloody murder when they had to expend manpower ($) to do anything they weren't getting labor standard to perform. Too bad George and Phil aren't around any more to answer questions like this. The JG is probably correct.
